Abstract
This study was performed to review the clinical and economic ef fectiveness of education and counseling for chronic kidney disease manageme nt (CKD) in chronic renal failure patients. We performed the overview of systematic reviews (SR) and searched for the related cost-effectiveness (CE) literature in KoreaMed, Ovid-Medline, and Centre for Reviews and Dissemination. The quality of the SR literature was evaluated using Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR). Four SR studies and four CE studies from 206 SRs and 292 CE studies, respectively, were finally selected for this analysis. The clinical effectiveness of educational programs was found to have consistently increased among chronic renal failure patients. In particular, it was found that an educational program was more effective when it incorporated psycho-social factors or was conducted over a period of four months. Although we could not determine the CE of the educational programs for CKD due to a lack of evidence, some educational programs reduced the hospitalization and medical costs by 23%. Further utilization and management of educational programs for CKD is warranted on the basis of certain evaluation studies.
